How to install XenCenter on Linux

XenCenter is a client software with GUI for managing XenServer/XCP hosts remotely. Using XenCenter, you can create virtual machines (VMs), access VM consoles, and configure VM storage and networking. As of this writing, Citrix only offers a Windows native client for XenCenter, and they don't seem to plan on releasing XenCenter Linux client any time soon. So if you would like to install XenCenter on Linux, you need to find an alternative to XenCenter on Linux, which is what this post is about.

Fortunately, there is a pretty good open-source alternative to XenCenter on Linux, which is called OpenXenManager. You can install OpenXenManager on Debian/Ubuntu Linux as follows.

Download OpenXenManager from its official website.

Before installing it, install all necessary prerequisites first.

$ sudo apt-get install python-gtk2 glade python-gtk-vnc python-glade2

Now, go ahead and install OpenXenManager as follows.

$ sudo tar xvfvz openxenmanager_rev48.tar.gz -C /opt

Finally, create a start-up script called xenmanager as follows.

$ sudo vi /usr/bin/xenmanager
#!/bin/sh
python /opt/openxenmanager/window.py &
$ sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/xenmanager

To launch OpenXenManager, just type the following:

$ xenmanager

The screenshot of OpenXenManager looks as follows.

While OpenXenManager faithfully realizes all generic VM management functionality of Citrix XenCenter, it does not support Citrix-specific features of XenCenter, such as activating a free XenServer license and installing XenServer updates.

    • More detail would be nice. Are you using it for XenServer or XCP? Also, what version of XenServer/XCP are you trying to access?

      I successfully tested OpenXenManager with XenServer 5.6.
